How to sync Google Contacts and Calendar with iPhone

December 3rd, 2008

I’ve been looking for some simple solution to sync Google Contacts & Calendar with my iPhone on the air (without syncing with my notebook). Finally I found a solution that seems to be working like a charm.

Setup process is quite simple and straigh forward.

Global environment

December 2nd, 2008

Globalization is a cruel and amazing reality.

Why cruel?

Ask this for any person who passed at least 2 years living and working in the country with totally different culture. And this person will tell you that this is a difficult challenge to face. You will need to review and change your way of thinking. You will need to deal with loneliness. You will be walking on the street without understanding a word. There are thousands of issues that you will need to deal with. And you will never be the same. When you will come back to your land – you will not be able to understand your friends, since you will still be under the influence of other culture.

Why amazing?

Almost because of the same issues. What does not kill us makes us stronger. You will become a different person. You will be able to understand people easily and quickly. You will get an outstanding experience and, probably, will learn other language. And believe me – with each language that you learn you are opening your mind and making it think different.

All this is, obviously, my personal opinion based on last 9 years of my life that I passed between Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Spain.

Software development in the global world

December 2nd, 2008

I think there will be no person in the IT industry who will not agree that we are working in the global world environment. And developing a software solution in this environment means that nobody knows who will be managing, updating or implementing new functionality to your system in next 1-2 years.

I know that there are thousands of articles, publications, forums and other material on this issue, but… Here is what I would like to ask (and suggest) to all developers:

  • Please, name all your variables, functions, classes, procedures and components in English.
I speak five languages, but that don’t mean that I will put variable name in Russian or in Portuguese. Because a person who will provide maintenance for system I developed can speak German and how the hell he will understand “nomerTelefona” or “numeroDoTelefone”? Guys, let’s face it – English is “de facto” standard for IT industry. So, please, use English for naming.
  • Please, name all your variables, functions, classes, procedures and components in the way that you (and any other person) can understand what is the functionality and what it serves for.
Imagine that you found a variable with name “cust_of_ph_num”. What that means? What it serves for? You will need to look in documentation (if you have one) or sniff all around the code to understand a functionality and what it serves for.
Now imagine other situation. A variable named “customer_office_phone_number”. I think you got the idea.
  • Please, leave comments (in English).
I know – every developer hates to loose a time (as they think) writing comments. Just make a simple exercise. Open a project that you made 1 year ago and try to understand the functionality of some function (preferably little bit complicated) without reading the comments. How much time it will take you?

Three simple things that will simplify your life and life of the others.
